The title for my graduation project came there due to many reasons. BREAK comes from: Breaking the line between two elements, One element breaks itself lose from the other one, A breakthrough, A pause, Mathematical: one opposite or divided by the other, Grammatical: the little sign between two words which separate them, Just a short catchy word.

Previous research

Previously I did some research on the topics ‘Ordinary’, ‘Everyday’ and ‘Routine’. I concluded that everyone is living according to a certain routine and that this routine is most reflected in the urban environment. This conclusion interests me since I am fascinated about public space. Public space is a complex space that belong to everybody and to nobody, everyone uses it in his or her own way, this out of a wish, a need, a desire or an emergency. Further I did research on the topic ‘a neighborhood’ in the suburbs. I chose this topic because I believe that in these areas inhabitants live more based on a routine than inhabitants of cities. They have fewer distractions which leads to the fact that their lives seem to be a loop of the same ongoing activities. The importance of the suburbs as a territorial decision will be taken in account and the fact that this areas are based on social division and aggregation. In suburbs there is often a search for a higher quality of living. I decided to do my research in one particular suburb because it is contextual what people need and how they interact with the space around them. Different persons are using space in a variety of ways, this also has been taken into account during my research. The research and investigation will be done in Amougies. Amougies is a Belgian suburb situated at the border between Flanders and Wallonia. The language barriers forms an issue when the inhabitants want to communicate, this represents a good example of the political problems Belgium is dealing with at the moment. The research and final design will happen through making and will use the bottom-up approach since it will be inspired by the inhabitants and the environment of the particular neighborhood.
