The title for my graduation project came there due to many reasons. BREAK comes from: Breaking the line between two elements, One element breaks itself lose from the other one, A breakthrough, A pause, Mathematical: one opposite or divided by the other, Grammatical: the little sign between two words which separate them, Just a short catchy word.

Physical Facebook

Unlike in the real world, in the virtual world our personal space has become visible. This by social networking sites such as Facebook, Netlog, Myspace, Twitter and Linkedin. Here we can show and chose our own identity, divide ourselves in groups and say what we like or dislike.
What if this could also be possible in the real world ?
What if Facebook comes physical?
What if the virtual world could be translated in the real one?
Facebook namely is the translation of our real personal space. On Facebook you can create your own space, this by a lot of factors. We can for example say with who we have a relationship and how strong this relationship is. Who our lover, family and friends are. In the virtual world you create your own border and can extend it whenever you want. We can also open ourselves up or close ourselves of by confirming, adding and liking. In the virtual world we chose who can stand the closest to us. We can show how large or small our personal space is and we can chose our own level of transparency. We create our own comfort space. For some people there are no strangers anymore, everyone is their ‘friend’. The networking sites have made it possible to be ‘connected’ to a lot of people. On Facebook you can see who does what, you are constantly looking and being looked upon at the same time. Facebook creates a stage and we are the performers. In the virtual world you show your identity to others by creating an image of yourself, this by telling what your hobbies are, what your background is and which activities you practice. We all desperately want to create our own identity by giving our opinion about something.

On Facebook we can update our status, say how we feel. Since it has become so easy to create an own identity and personal space in the virtual world, most of us start to dislike the real world. Some even don’t go outside anymore because they don’t want to miss out on anything of their friends. In real live you can have a bad day, but your Facebook picture always keeps smiling. Social networking sites have create situations that previously were not available for us.  By all of this our real personal space is in danger.
Where is the border between the real and the virtual?
How could the Facebook wall become the street again?
How could our virtual world become real?
How could Facebook become physical ?
