The title for my graduation project came there due to many reasons. BREAK comes from: Breaking the line between two elements, One element breaks itself lose from the other one, A breakthrough, A pause, Mathematical: one opposite or divided by the other, Grammatical: the little sign between two words which separate them, Just a short catchy word.

Sensory border

The design which I will create will question our private space and makes us a aware of its boundaries. The invisible border between people will become visible. Since the size of our intimate bubble depends on a lot of aspects, the design will be adjustable to your own preferences. It will be possible to open yourself up or close yourself of from the rest of the world, while creating different scenes by choosing the level of transparency. The design will be a new way of expressing ourselves by its identity. Therefore it will become an interactive layer made out of a smart material. This material will be insulating due to several layers. The design will create an identity by making a border and dividing elements, therefore it will create a space within a space. Probably the design will be made out of soft materials on the inside and hard on the outside. It will become an extension of our own body/skin. Therefore an inspiration source will be the human skin which exists out of several layers. The human skin opens and closes it selves ( breaths ). This aspect I also want to achieve in the intimacy border. We also decorate our skin with tattoos, jewelry, piercings and clothes this to our own preferences, this is where the adjustable part of the surface comes in. The human skin has multiple layers and guards the underlying elements. The skin interfaces with the environment and is therefore the layer that protects the body and absorbs the sunlight while filtering it. The intimate border will protect and insulate us and should be self-supporting.

Guidelines for developing the design:
Personal, adjustable, different materials, interactive, insulating, protecting, self-supporting, chose transparency, …
My motivation came there since our private border is desperately seeking for a new solution in times of decreasing population and busy public spaces.
